South London Illustrator and experimental hip hop artist Ash Shakur premieres his latest jam “Horror Flick” exclusively with WPGM today ahead of its official release tomorrow. The experimental track draws on horror movie inspired themes and images and drops today perfectly in time for Halloween.
Already known for his playful and unorthodox output, “Horror Flick” shows Ash continue this approach, with the electro-alt rap track boasting a brave production full of pitched up vocals, unusual key changes and trademark bars which are full of nostalgia and uplifting motifs.
Ash cleverly depicts images of trips to the cinema, paying homage to old school horror movies and scary trips to the cinema with your partner. It celebrates those awkward moments when as a man you try to not act spooked by a movie when deep down you know you are! Ash explains further:
“The record is full of fantasy, lust and danger. It was really fun to create this – the concept was created after a conversation with my girlfriend about horror movies – she was like ‘no Ash, there’s no way I’m watching this’! I feel as guys when we watch horrors it’s just to front. The truth is we’re scared too! So to my fellas, next time you take your lady to watch a horror flick it’s cool to be a little shook up too haha”.
Ash Shakur has a leftfield take on hip hop, mixing witty storytelling with boom bap beats, smooth melodies and catchy choruses. His unorthodox style and flow has won fans across the globe, with previous singles “Never Alone”, “Nokia” and “Shine” all gaining love from the likes of BBC 1Xtra, Noisey, Indie Shuffle, Notion and lots more.
Ash is also the co-founder of Art Life Central, a collective that expresses creativity and freedom through music and fashion. He aims to inspire people through his vibrant visuals and incorporates this art direction across all of his musical content.
“Horror Flick” is out on November 1 on all digital outlets, stream it below in the meantime.
