Purple Ferdinand – “Left To Fight”

One of the country’s most beloved and elusive young R&B stars, Purple Ferdinand, follows on from her critically-acclaimed EP Rain or Shine last year – making THE FADER’s ‘Best R&B EPs of the Year‘ – with her gorgeous new release “Left To Fight”.

Continuing a breathtakingly natural ability to craft moving and substantial songs from seemingly thin air, this latest single marks her return from her writing and living in Bermuda and proves the age old saying that sometimes “less is more”. Driven by a solemn piano melody and carried on to the end by a violin solo, Purple Ferdinand explores her most vulnerable place and her soft vocals brings that alive in the song.

Speaking on the track, Purple states: “’Left to Fight’ was written a little while back, yet the sentiment remains the same today; it's an insight into my views on my experience in the music world at the time, about social standards and simply the pressures we can feel – leaving us with this pure need for honestly and justice. You feeling left to fight for what you believe.”

SHINee – “Good Evening”

Famous K-Pop boy band SHINee have released the music video for the first single “Good Evening” from their sixth studio album The Story Of Light.

“Good Evening” is a powerful electronic pop track with a catchy chorus and features a vocal melody sampled from the famous 112 track “Cupid”. The song was written and produced by production team The Fliptones.

The music video features great aesthetics and sees the band members in a crystal room with many electronic machines, a recording room and a room with a neon crystal floor and many flowers around it.

The Story of Light is set to release in three parts. The first was released today and is their first release in Korea since their last album titled 1 of 1 back in 2016. However, this comeback is very special because is after the death of Jonghyun.

Emmanuel Speaks + TE Dness – “Who Told You?”

Who told you spoken word poetry needs to be conventional? Who told you there are ANY rules?

Emmanuel Speaks is a performance poet, from East London – as seen on Channel 4, Huffington Post, GRM Daily, Sofar Sounds and more; recently collaborating with New Look for their Christmas and Spring/Summer advertising campaigns. Claiming to “influence and tell the stories of a generation”, he is an individual who has gone through a transition in his life from studying full-time at university to now becoming full-time invested in music.

Today, Emmanuel releases the first official single from his upcoming album The Composer titles “Who Told You?” and features one of the hottest rappers out of West London and the UK, TE Dness. Spoken Word is often very formulaic and Emmanuel seeks to change the dynamics of the art form, fusing it with music; potent 808’s and purposefully sinister overtones, maintaining the eloquence and passion.

I wrote ‘Who Told You‘ at a point in my life where I was just angry. Vexed because I felt underestimated. Underappreciated, in more ways than one. I soon realised I had nobody to blame but myself, so cue, the rebirth.

I knew I was talented but I have so much more to give, so much unlocked potential and the ability to completely shift a culture by both putting more of my life into my art, exploring my curiosities through it, and marrying them with the experiences of loved ones to learn and grow.”

Clean Bandit + Demi Lovato – “Solo”

One of the potential summer anthems is already here! British electronic band Clean Bandit have released the new music video for “Solo” featuring Demi Lovato.

“Solo” is an upbeat EDM song about self-loving in spite of a heartbreak, based on Clean Bandit member Grace Chatto’s relationship breakup. The song was written by Chatto, fellow bandmate Jack Patterson, Lovato, Camille Purcell and Fred, with production handled by Chatto and Mark Ralph. Lovato’s voice was recorded in a studio while they listened via FaceTime, since they could not arrange a studio session together.

The music video revolves around Grace trying to sort out her relationship, to which “mad scientists” Jack and Luke come to the rescue with an unexpected solution: turn it into a dog.

Sona – “Damilola”

After last month’s hot take “Come For You” with Kwams and January’s bold R&B smash “Feeling You“, Sona comes back once again with some more music to feast upon. Working alongside long-time collaborator and producer ATG Musick, the winning combination of a duo have put together another catchy joint in the form of “Damilola“.

Showcasing a fresh sound, the track certainly brings a bunch of good vibes. Sona delves into the Afro-Swing realm with this easy production and certainly makes it a banger of a track with his unmistakable tone and the seamless way he weaves English and Yoruba together. Sona is definitely not one to disappoint the fans.

In a short space of time, the acclaimed South London native has been championed by the likes of MTV Base, BBC 1Xtra, Capital Xtra, Rinse FM, Radar Radio, KISS Fresh, The FADER, Link Up TV, SBTV and the MOBO Awards, among others, and now he remains one to watch within this burgeoning Afrowave landscape for 2018.
