WPGM Commentary: lordkez On The Making Of Her New EP ‘Charcotta’

My name is lordkez and Charcotta is my sophomore EP. Creating this project has been the most fulfilling endeavour of my life to date. I started working on the songs when I moved to Johannesburg in late 2019. It was such a huge transition for me to move to Johannesburg, everything was new and everything was so much quicker and bigger, the city is crazy!

My manager and executive producer Vaughn Thiel helped me adapt and assisted me in so many ways, we had a little studio at his offices down the road from where I was staying, which was really convenient, because I would be at the studio everyday with the team working on songs and different ideas.

My team is filled with incredible talent, ODI my engineer is a legend, Shooter is an incredible producer that I work closely with, Mars Baby is another amazing artist and producer that I work closely with.

Jade is someone that assists me in different creatives ways, he is a dope assets to have by my side, while Mash is our designer and Sachin is our videographer and photographer and finally Vaughn & Fred are really dope creatives that help me find ways to translate my talents and release my music and do all that executive stuff. lol

The process I followed for the making of this project was very collaborative, everything was organic and everything was pure, we made sure to do the business right and to follow our intuition.

I know I am speaking very plural here, but that is because I genuinely feel that Charcotta is not just my project but literally everyone in my team made this come alive the way it did, everyone contributed so much to this art, I feel like this is OUR project.

When I was writing the songs, I was speaking from my heart, I wanted to tell my story and introduce my inner thoughts to people that have been listening to my music and to people that might only be hearing about me now.

I am the type of person that wants to accurately represent myself through honest expression, so I made a conscious decision to explore my vulnerability in this project, to ensure I uphold my integrity. When I grow, my music grows and that is the way I want it to be for the rest of my career.

I consider myself a genre fluid artist, I can drift between sonics and sounds without much effort, so I wanted to find a way to do that but keep it within a theme. We worked hard at crafting the music so that it suits my style and is palatable to any audience.

Charcotta is a story of my growth as a person and as an artist, recording this project has been one of the most fulfilling journeys in my life. I wrote these songs in a little studio room in Johannesburg.

I cried, I laughed, I questioned myself and my purpose, I found the pieces of me that I ran away from for so many years in my life and I turned them into melodies and stories, I lost my mind several times, just to find it again in the music.

I am so proud of this project, I have gone through so much to get to the place I am now, which in my mind is only the beginning of lordkez and I can’t wait for you guys to join me on the rest of this journey. Listen to my CHARCOTTA EP below and stream it on your favourite platform here.
