Alternative Sound Selection – May 2014

Juce IV

I’m back again, just in time before the month of May draws to a close, to reveal and highlight what has been my favourite new alternative urban records from the past few weeks and without any hesitation, I’m glad to announce that London female trio JUCE, who we shared with you back in March, are now signed to Universal/Island Records. In addition to that, they return with an excellent new tune titled “(H)ours” which was premiered by Annie Mac earlier this week. Listen to the summer-fine record below.

Knox Brown

You might remember Knox Brown from his production work on Wretch 32’s “Black Out” featuring Shakka. It will also do you good to know that the British producer/songwriter has also worked with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Jay Z and Aloe Blacc. Now Mr. Brown is adding artist to his title and going solo with this exquisitely soulful offering titled “Harry Code“, filled with brilliant Reggae, Gospel and Blues undertones for our listening pleasure.

Recently featured by our friends at MTV Iggy, British singer/songwriter Ezi Emela makes her very first appearance on Alternative Sound Selection with a soul-stirring single titled “Broken“. Led by Ezi Emela’s soft and compelling vocals, backed by lush drums and string arrangements and accompanied by an intimate music video, asking for forgiveness never sounded so good. Watch the video for “Broken” below.

Joel Baker II

Finally, I leave you in the capable hands of Joel Baker who released his sophomore EP Every Vessel a couple of weeks ago to rave reviews and critical acclaim. Is it just me or is Mr. Baker filling the shoes one Ben Howard has left void? Blasphemy one might say but Joel Baker has proven himself to be an amazing artist and a compelling songwriter. Purchase his Every Vessel EP here and enjoy “Thorns” below.
