WPGM Commentary: Mia Mi Wants To Be Free From Toxicity And Negative People On ‘Down’

Hi my name is Mia Mi and I’m a singer-songwriter from London. I best describe my sound as soulful Pop with a modern day edge, taking inspiration from the likes of Amy Winehouse, and Dua Lipa.

I have been perfecting my craft for 10 years and have over the years gained notable achievements and support [including] BBC Introducing and Kiss FM, described as “a powerful voice that tackles some unexpected topics”.

My style of songwriting is heavily influenced by storytelling events and situations in my everyday life that I can turn into songs. As a performer I always want to connect with my audience and give them that same feeling I had when initially writing the songs.

I have at times struggled with self confidence and how the world perceives me [but] I have always known that I wanted to be an artist, so I have had to put aside my insecurities and use them to help others who are going through the same things.

I have always been a fan of Pop and RnB music together. I love to perform to uptempo tracks which is where the Pop element comes in, but I also love the soulful vocals of an R&B track.

This is where you can hear the influence of both in my music. I grew up listening to mostly female powerhouse vocals and taught myself riffs and runs by listening to the songs over and over again.

My latest single “Down” comes straight off the back of releasing a dance cover of the Pussycat Dolls track “Hot Like Me”, which landed at number six in the dance charts. I knew I wanted my next single to be similar to my original music with a big powerhouse vocal and pop production.

The initial idea came from feeling that I was surrounded by negativity all the time and it was ruining my motivation to succeed, as I was overwhelmed with doubt. I wanted the music to reflect that feeling, so I knew I had to have a big build with an even bigger hook.

In the studio session with producer David Spoils and writer J Elle, we came up with the lyrics “you drag me down” with a descending vocal run, as we felt like the music and the lyrics were portraying perfectly the feeling I was going through at the time.

The rest of the lyrics came pretty easy to us after we had the initial idea. I always try and make my music universal to all and never pinpoint one specific moment or person, as I want the listener to be able to relate it to their own life and find comfort in the fact that someone else is going through the same thing.

The reason why I love this track so much is not just [because of] the production and writing, but it’s also the feeling when listening to the track. It has meaningful themes but it’s also uplifting at the same time.

I’m a regular user on all social media platforms and love finding new and creative ways on how to promote my music. I have found that this works best in building your fan base, as I know who to reach out to and what kind of audience my music is attracting.

I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has been supporting me on my journey so far, whether that’s at my gigs or just streaming my music and I can’t wait to share everything I have been working on.

Make sure you check out my brand new single “Down”, listen to it below.
