Diplo is not a newcomer in the music business. Having years of DJing, producing and frequent collaborations with other artists under his belt, has made him one of the most well known brand names in the industry and unique at his kind of music for all of his loyal fans throughout the globe.
Now he has a brand new and vibrant EP out entitled California. Thomas Wesley Pentz, otherwise known as Diplo, has delivered a magnificent EP full of fresh collaborations and glorious hip hop sounds at the helm. The loops are changing from song to song but one thing is for sure, his star music quality, which shines all the way through it.
“Worry No More“; the first track of the EP, featuring Lil Yachty and Santigold, is all about the summer 2018 vibes, where worries aren’t allowed. Instead he “advices” the listener to go and follow their dreams and that they will accomplice everything then.
It seems in this song, the message is that it is in your state of mind to set the right goals and with positive energy, everything will be as you have dreamed it from the early beginning of your journey.
On “Suicidal“, the dirty sounds Hip Hop sounds are mixed with a sexy danceful symmetry. Desiigner helps in the vocal parts, making it even more heartfelt and full of emotions. Desiigner is probably best known to everyone for his hit song “Panda” which was in the charts for many weeks, on “Suicidal”, they both (Diplo & Desiigner) give the right energy needed to uplift the track.
In the third song, entitled “Look Back“, the music artist DRAM delivers a friendly feature. This song is an atmospheric song transporting the listener musically, with a more sentimental romance twist this time. It is all about those intimate feelings and thoughts that a man has for a woman, who has seductively conquered his heart and transformed his life.
“Wish” is a love song about past relationships and some of the effects they have on our lives. In this track, the young rapper Trippie Redd makes a guest appearance, rapping and rhyming with grace on it. It feels like nostalgic emotions of the golden era of hip hop appear and pop out harmonically, even subconsciously sometimes frequently in this track.
“Color Blind” is the track that follows, and it uplifts the tempo with R&B sounds mixed with dance elements. Even though it is all about being color blind, the music in it shows otherwise. It is full of colorful electronic sounds and bass lines. The collaboration this time is with the young artist Lil Xan and it is definitely a smooth and elevating one.
The EP closes with a remix of the song “Get It Right“, a song which we first heard in a 2017 documentary about the culture of young adult in Cuba. MØ & GoldLink are featuring also on it. This festive outro of the California EP is just what is needed to kick-start our spring, even early summer mood mode and get comfy with the feelings and vibes that we will soon have.
California is a very good hip hop and R&B EP, which can pleasantly accompany the listener through the rest of these winter days with ease, as we break into spring. Every song is different and unique but the core is the same, the love for music and musicality.
