Best New Music Of The Week // November 26 – December 2, 2018

ONUR – “I Don’t Know Why I Fall In Love”

Track after track, ONUR continues to impress. After the success of his last two singles, he reveals another side to his art as he continues to peel the layers of his heart with his new single “I Don’t Know Why I Fall In Love“.

Drawing on 90’s R&B and Latin music influences, the 22-year-old versatile artist reflects with despair on past embraces with a former partner, lamenting a passion that is now long gone. ONUR’s passionate falsetto caresses the guitar strings with such sensual grace, it draws you in and keeps you listening till the very end.

“Carrying on from the theme of my break-up and me not getting over it, ‘I Don’t Know Why I Fall In Love‘ reflects on my thoughts of her a while after the relationship ended, and how I’m still stuck in heartbreak, yet don’t want to be, therefore blaming myself for being in love. I wanted this song to be way more intimate so it came across more like an open letter to her.”

Having spent extensive time on various renowned stages, the Londoner is garnering rave reviews and support from EARMILK, Konbini, Cosmopolitan, Lost Culture and many more. ONUR’s highly anticipated debut EP is scheduled for early 2019.

Hablot Brown + Tim Atlas – “Color World”

Following his breakthrough release “Sidestep” – picking up critical support on the way – rising California artist Tim Atlas releases a gorgeous new collaborative offering with Hablot Brown, “Color World”.

His unique blend of indie pop, R&B, and soul instantly connected with fans and Tim has already garnered 25M streams. Collaborating with eclectic, neo-soul/R&B L.A. trio Hablot Brown on “Color World” is an easy sell – a soulful, groovy, warm track that defies genre and continues the intrigue around these two rising acts.

Speaking on the track, Tim states: “‘Color World’ came to us quickly and naturally; the Hablot Brown guys and I belong to relatively different genres, but this collab was perfectly split between our sounds.”

Already bringing tastemaker heat themselves, Hablot Brown were streamed over 7.7M times on Spotify in their first 12 months in addition to smashing straight into the Global Viral 50 and Fresh Finds, releasing their sophomore EP with hypercool US label Soulection.

The Hablot Brown stated: “Working with Tim on this track was fantastic. Color World was an instant vibe in the studio, and pretty much wrote itself.”

ELINA – “Champion”

Singer-songwriter ELINA provides all the company you need on new single “Champion” ahead of her debut EP in Spring.

“Champion” is a deep, stirring cut, powerfully led by the mist sumptuous piano chords. Stripped back and raw, the warmth from ELINA’s vocals is welcoming yet the deep lyrics on this particular track are greatly personal ultimately moving, as she speaks on the unease & vulnerability in not knowing the answers to how their hearts desire feels back.

“To me, Champion is about fear” explains ELINA. “Personally, when I get scared of losing someone or if I feel inadequate in a relationship – any relationship – I tend to disguise that fear with rejection. Sometimes even with anger.”

“The meaning of “break my heart like a champion” is basically a request to your loved one not to break your heart slowly or gently. Sometimes the fall hurts even more than actually hitting the ground – it’s easier to know what will happen instead of fearing it and to live in uncertainty.”

Relatively new to her music career, ELINA already boasts around 16 million streams to date on just the first two cuts on Spotify alone. Already an established songwriter with credits from the likes of NEIKED, Maroon 5 & SZA, there’s more than enough proof that she is indeed something special.

Offset – “Red Room”

American rapper, singer and songwriter Offset has dropped a fresh new single titled “Red Room” without initially teasing or hinting the release.

The member of the hip-hop trio Migos had been the only one from the group who had not released a solo album yet. In the past months, Quavo had dropped his solo album Quavo Huncho while Takeoff shared his project The Last Rocket.

However, Offset has now confirmed that his first project will finally arrive on December 14. “Red Room” is the first published song from the untitled album.

The single was produced by Metro Boomin and features verses that deal with Offset’s childhood and family. The track provides us an insight into the concept of the complete album. The hip-hop artist has told the New York Times: “I’m going to start opening up more”.

Offset has also spoken to Billboard about his forthcoming solo album: “I’m talking about relevant situations that have occurred over the last 18 or 24 months, like me being in the crash, my kids, my family time and me being married. There’s different parts of my life. The ups and downs of being in music, the feeling of people doubting me and being the underdog to becoming the big dog”.

FKJ – “Is Magic Gone”

French producer, singer, multi-instrumentalist Vincent Fenton aka FKJ has shared his brand new song “Is Magic Gone“, his first release with his new label home, Mom+Pop Music, and is a perfect way for him to close out a year of sold out shows.

Marking a new chapter for FKJ, “Is Magic Gone” is a smooth piano-laden track with modern electronic jazz production that features funky bass lines, tight guitar riffs, and effortless transitions between genres. It is a flex of the young producers versatility – not to mention the addition of his beautiful vocals – and it shows us that his magic has most certainly not gone.

“This one was written on the bus while touring the US. It was during winter 2017 on the east coast. We were driving by night and everyone was sleeping. It was a strong emotional time for me… I was going thru some stuff. I had my instruments set up at the back of the bus and made this song that night. It was like a therapy and it really instantly healed me.”

Aside from his solo work, FKJ has collaborated with many other artists, including Masego whom he collaborated with on the impressive improvised track that would later become the hit song “Tadow” which garnered over 73 million views on Youtube and over 43 million streams to date. He’s also worked with Tom Misch, Tom Bailey and more.
